Why ‘Slow Horse’?

Slow Horse Press is named after a proverb attributed to the Confucian Chinese philosopher Xunxi, who claimed that the slow horse that just keeps going will eventually travel as much ground as the fast horse.

Like many authors’ journeys, my path to publication has been the slow one, spanning seven books and countless revisions before the first was published.

I’ve also worked with real horses for twenty years and have reached the point in life where the literal slow, relaxed horse is the kind I prefer.

In a world that seems to be spinning out of control, choose the slow horse.

“There is freedom in choosing to sit and be still when everything is always telling you to move, move fast.” (Elizabeth Acevedo, The Poet X)
